Italian Elementary School Children

(From Classic Italian Tales/Novelline Italiane by Floria Parmiani)

As Beautiful As A Garden

Marcello's school is beautiful, large and airy. The sun enters through the big open windows and the classroom is full of light.

The children are happy in that sunny school where they study, sing and play.

It doesn't look like a school, but like a blossoming garden. The flowers of that garden are the happy little students.

Sembra Un Giardino

Italians begin elementary school when they reach their sixth year of age; after five years, they continue their education through the scuola media (junior high) for three years. After this mandatory schooling, they can choose among a series of specialized technical and business-oriented high schools: the istituto tecnico, the istituto commerciale, or the scuole magistrali, (this school prepares educators for the elementary schools). The liceo is a type of high school that lasts five years and readies students for a college career. There are three types of liceo: the liceo classico emphasizes the humanities, the liceo scientifico science and math, and the liceo linguistico foreign  languages.

Italian universities have a long history. For example, the University of Bologna dates back to the eleventh century and is one of the oldest in Europe. Copernicus, the proponent of the heliocentric system, studied there at the beginning of the sixteen century, Most Italian universities are located in the historical center of large cities.

In Italy, almost all levels of education are subsidized by the state and run by the Ministero di Pubblica Istruzione, the department of education located in Rome.
